I was overwhelmed by nerves. I knew I would be on my own, I didn’t speak a word of English, and I was afraid of being questioned about my citizenship status. But, ignorant of all the potential consequences, I tried to embrace it as a new adventure, trusting that my parents had the best intentions for me.
Outside of the neighborhood kids, I didn’t know anyone at my new school. I wasn’t sure what was expected of me or even what my own expectations were. Nevertheless, I was about to start school.
I think my apá sensed the anxiety I was feeling that first morning. He had a very optimistic attitude about most things, and he had a good sense of humor. In his efforts to calm my nerves, he said, “You only need to know one phrase. Repeat after me. ‘Whatcha name?’”
“What does that mean?” I asked. “Como te llamas!” he said excitedly, “What is your name!”
